"No Longer A Slumdog" by K.P. Yohannan

This book breaks my heart. It is about the poorest children and families in Asia. K.P. works with Gospel for Asia and this book brings to the forefront the fact that everywhere, economic status is a way to discriminate against people.

The book explains that in Asian countries, the status you are born into is the status that you are expected to remain. The upper status (called Caste) won't even associate with the poor. There are so many photos of children and families throughout the book. To be able to see the smiling faces even in these very poor regions, makes me want to reach out and give each one a hug.

Gospel for Asia has set up centers called Bridges of Hope, in various areas to provide for basic needs such as showing the children how to brush their teeth and comb their hair. Many of these children have never had an actual bath! They also provide basic medical needs and work with the children to get a good education. In my humble opinion, the most important service they provide is the knowledge that they are loved by the Lord no matter what.

As the children begin to feel better about themselves they share this positivity with their families. This has a huge impact because it then spreads throughout their neighborhood. When I am financially able, I will be sponsoring a child. You can learn more about this mission at www.gfa.org. This book is offered free through Gospel for Asia. I am truly touched by the plight of these families. It's a good read and will open your eyes. If you want to get your FREE copy click here. As always, happy reading.

"Blind Descent" by Brian Dickenson

I really think this book falls into several categories. Yes, it does have a Christian component, but it also is based on a true story, and believe me there is drama.

The man in the book, Brian, is a former Navy Seal and loves mountain climbing. He has been doing it for a long time. The story walks you through his process of deciding to do another climb and all the things that that entails. Throughout the book, there are details and feelings this reader wouldn't have thought of. Fear comes to my mind or maybe, are you crazy?

I didn't know if I would like this book at first because it's not something I would normally read. The book starts off slowly, which is actually good now that I've read the whole thing. This helps you understand the emotion behind the story as a whole. Not only did I learn a lot about mountain climbing, but I also learned about the different regions that are portrayed in the book. The book takes you through the man's entire process from beginning to end.

It is so well written that you get to know the people well in the book and feel like you're right there with them. In my opinion, that's what reading should do for you. It should transform you from where you are into where the people in the story are. This book does that for you. Hats off to Brian for being able to share so well with us.

So, whether you like to read Christian books, drama books, or true stories, this book is for you. I absolutely loved this book. I give it five stars.   As previously promised, here's a link to check it out here.

Happy reading :)
